How we engage with employers and education providers

This page explains how the government and the UK Border Agency maintain regular dialogue with employers and education providers on issues relating to illegal working and sponsorship under the points-based system.

This dialogue takes place through a number of bodies. By following the links below, you can find out about the membership and terms of reference of these bodies, and read the minutes of their meetings.

Points-based system

There are three 'taskforces' through which the Home Office works with employer and trade union representatives, education providers, other government departments and strategic bodies to consider the development and implementation of the points-based system:

Labour market issues

Our sectors advisory panels, which involve representatives from a number of relevant industry bodies, aim to promote the sharing and exchange of information and intelligence about the labour market in different industrial sectors of the United Kingdom. This helps us to be flexible and responsive in developing and delivering policy on the employment of migrants.

There are five panels, covering the following sectors:

  • information technology, communications and electronics
  • healthcare
  • engineering
  • hospitality
  • teaching

Illegal working

The Illegal Working Group is a high-level stakeholder group, chaired by the Minister for Borders and Immigration. It enables the government to engage key stakeholders on illegal working and related issues, and to understand the impact of government policy on employers and employees.
